An alternative communication therapy for non-speaking individuals.
An alternative communication therapy for non-speaking individuals.
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) enables nonspeaking, unreliably speaking, and minimally speaking people to communicate by pointing to letters on a letterboard or keyboard as an alternative form of communication. This method teaches the motor skills necessary to effectively bridge the gap between cognitive and motor abilities through repeated practice. Spellers can communicate their knowledge, thoughts, and ideas as motor control and planning improve.
When my son was 9 years old I read the book Underestimated by JB and Jamie Handley. I immediately pursued teaching him to communicate using a letterboard. I didn’t even know if he could spell and definitely didn’t know how intelligent and perceptive he is. As a former educator and now mom of a speller, I knew I had to bring this to our community. The Spellers Collective is a learning center for nonspeaking people to learn, communicate, and connect.
Any nonspeaking, unreliably speaking, or minimally speaking individual over the age of five. Many spellers are autistic, but there are spellers with other disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, and other genetic disorders in which sensory-motor skills are affected.
Presuming Competence:
Non-speaking does not equal non-thinking. We believe all people can, and want to learn, despite their perceived limitations.
